1.4 Choosing the Optimal Routing Protocol

Choose wisely.

Some fundamental questions when choosing a routing protocol for the enterprise include (a) how big is the network, and can the protocol scale properly? (b) are there requirements for multi-vendor support? (c) is the staff competent in the routing protocol enough to troubleshoot and maintain it?

Characteristics of each routing protocol vary. Each may run a different type of algorithm – “Is it running distance vector or link state algorithms?” Each routing protocol varies in its ability to converge and operate in relation to sub-optimal network events. Also, each protocol scales differently across the network from an operational standpoint.

Different parts of the network infrastructure may require different attributes, such as high-availability and fast convergence on the campus core or the ability to manage multiple, diverse, and unequal paths on the WAN edge.
