3.15 Feasibility Condition

A few key terms to remember about the Feasibility Condition, the mechanism by which EIGRP maintains a loop-free topology.

  • Path Cost (Feasible Distance) – The total cost along the path from a source to a destination from the local router’s perspective. This is the sum of the Reported Distance plus the path cost of the local link to the EIGRP neighbor.
  • Reported Distance (Advertised Distance) – The total cost along the routing path from the next hop router’s perspective, in other words, the upstream neighbor’s Feasible Distance.
  • Feasibility Condition – A comparison between the best Feasible Distance for a local router’s prefix and the Reported Distance of the associated upstream neighbor, where for a route to be considered valid, the Reported Distance must be less than the Feasible Distance.
