12.4 BGP Routing Policies

BGP Policies are defined at a per-AS level, and contain parameters and attributes that are only relevant to the local AS.

BGP advertises routes to a neighboring AS only if it is using them itself.

This is representative of the hop-by-hop paradigm that characterizes the internet.

While BGP can control the traffic path to a neighboring AS (because it is a local decision)…

BGP in one AS cannot influence the routing decisions of another AS.

Each AS selects its own best path. Advertisements to other BGP neighbors use only the best path to a destination. In other words, for each BGP neighbor, you will receive only one AS path for each route toward a destination.
