EIGRP named configuration (as opposed to EIGRP classic configuration) was developed in Cisco IOS 12.2.(33) to both simplify and centralized configurations, and fix metric calculation problems associated with high-bandwidth links.
EIGRP named configuration is available in IOS versions 15.0(1)M, 12.2(33)SRE, and 12.2(33)XNE and subsequent releases
Here are a few key points about EIGRP named configuration:
- Where classic configuration required commands to be entered in global, router, and interface configurations modes, EIGRP named configuration mode centralizes all configuration, thereby reducing the likelihood of configuration errors.
- Where classic EIGRP does not scale beyond 1 Gbps links because it uses 32-bit metrics, EIGRP named configuration scales to links and port-channels up to 4 Tbps using wide-metric 64-bit calculations and RIB scaling methods.
- Where command syntax is different between EIGRP (IPv4) and EIGRPv6, EIGRP named configuration unifies IPv4 and IPv6 configuration.
