11.4 Public IP Address Assignments

IANA = The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, the organization that oversees the five regional RIRs, or regional internet registries. They have the following characteristics:

  1. Coordinate the global pool of IP addresses and provides them to RIRs
  2. Coordinates the global pool of AS numbers and provides them to RIRs
  3. Manages the DNS root zone
  4. Manages the Internet Protocol numbering system, alongside different standards bodies

Five RIRs:

  • AfriNIC – Africa
  • APNIC – Asia/Pacific
  • ARIN – North America
  • LACNIC – Central America/South America
  • RIPE – Europe & the Middle East (this was the first RIR to be formed)

There are two types of IP addresses:

  • Provider-assigned (PA): These are assigned by the ISP, and cannot be moved between ISPs
  • Provider-independent (PI): Assigned directly by a RIR

IPv6 addresses assigned by the ISP usually come as follows:

  • For end users = /64
  • For business users = /48, /52, or /56
