When to use BGP:

  • Your organization needs multi-homed connectivity to the internet
  • You are a Transit AS (such as an ISP)
  • Your organization requires an Inter-AS routing policy

When you might not need to use BGP:

  • You only have single-homed AS connectivity
  • Your router has insufficient resources to handle BGP
  • Your administrators do not understand how to configure it properly
  • You do not need to manipulate routes

When multi-homing between ISPs in different ASNs, remember to filter and avoid becoming an accidental transit AS!
