Here are reasons to use NAT:
- To conserve IPv4 addressing space
- To provide public addressing for inbound web services (1:1 NAT)
- To translate outbound private addresses (PAT)
- To facilitate mergers between organizations where there is IP address overlap
- To avoid re-addressing initiatives
Note:
- Real Addresses = the address assigned to an internal host (non-NAT)
- Mapped Addresses = the NAT’d address that masks the Real addresses
