11.9 Need for NAT

Here are reasons to use NAT:

  • To conserve IPv4 addressing space
  • To provide public addressing for inbound web services (1:1 NAT)
  • To translate outbound private addresses (PAT)
  • To facilitate mergers between organizations where there is IP address overlap
  • To avoid re-addressing initiatives

Note:

  • Real Addresses = the address assigned to an internal host (non-NAT)
  • Mapped Addresses = the NAT’d address that masks the Real addresses
